Gold after the Fed: Bearish structure, active momentum warning

Gold failed to sustain its initial post-Fed rebound, yet the latest quote remains above the developing weekly average. That conflict matters more for execution than a bearish headline alone. The three-week assessment is bearish, with downward signals across the tracked timeframes, but the decision is to stand aside from new positions. Existing shorts already face a separate momentum warning.

The trap is treating a bearish view as permission

The trap is assuming that agreement across trend signals removes the need to respect the current price conflict. The weekly average is close to the quote, but proximity does not cancel an active risk instruction. Nor does the distant structural boundary justify keeping full short exposure until the entire thesis fails. A short-term recovery can coexist with a broader downward assessment. The coming data release creates another reason to separate a market view from an entry decision, without asserting that the event's risk is unpriced.

A Fed hold still leaves inflation unresolved

On 28 October, the Fed held its target range at 3.75%-4.00% by a 10-2 vote. Both dissenters preferred a 25-basis-point increase. The statement described inflation as elevated. That combination does not establish a pivot toward easing, but neither does it commit the majority to a December increase. A future decision still depends on incoming information. For gold, the relevant transmission is how the message changes real yields and the dollar, rather than the unchanged policy rate alone.

Reuters on 29 October cited CME pricing of about 78% for a December hike, versus 84% before the announcement: a decline of six percentage points. This is a dated market-implied policy probability, not a probability of a hot PCE print or a bearish gold scenario. It also means that the presence of two hawkish dissenters should not be used to claim the meeting increased those hike odds.

Reuters recorded spot gold at $4,039.39 at 19:12 UTC on 28 October, down 0.5% on that report's basis, after a temporary recovery during the Fed press conference. Its next cited observation was $4,037.98 at 04:10 UTC on 29 October, down 0.7% on that report's basis. The two prices differ by $1.41; the second percentage is not an additional 0.7% decline from the first quote. A later screenshot headline reporting a 1% fall has a different timestamp and is not paired with either price here.

Check rates, positioning and physical demand separately

Gold was 4036.90 USD/oz at 2026-10-29 07:33:00 UTC, from MT5 XAUUSD.sml one-minute data. Price was above weekly VWAP 4034.43 by 2.46 USD/oz and below weekly TrendSL 4295.37 by 258.48 USD/oz.

The generation brief lists US 10Y nominal yield at 4.99%, US 2Y at 4.70% and US 10Y real yield at 2.64%, without individual observation dates in the exported reference table. If sampled together, the nominal yields imply a positive 29-basis-point slope, not inversion. This single observation does not establish steepening or a future policy path. A higher real yield can raise the opportunity cost of a non-interest-bearing asset, but those undated levels do not prove real yields rose after the meeting. No international yield spread can be calculated without comparable counterpart observations.

The original analysis cites DXY 102.255 at 07:23 UTC on 29 October, attributed to yfinance DX-Y.NYB one-minute data. That is a separate intermarket quote, not the gold price or a synchronized return. Dollar strength can make unchanged dollar-priced gold more expensive in other currencies. To establish the strength and direction of that effect in this session, compare compatible timestamps; the index alone does not measure capital moving out of gold.

COT CFTC 088691, Managed Money, futures only, report date 2026-10-20: 120,970 long / 16,764 short contracts, net long 104,206. Net positioning fell 2,883 versus 2026-10-13, moving toward more short exposure in this sample. Percentile 42.31 within 52 weeks ranks signed net positions; a relatively low rank can still coexist with net long exposure. The net sign and change provide a cross-check against price trends; concentrated exposure can increase sensitivity to reversals. Publication date is unverified; weekly lagged positioning does not replace current price evidence.

Net length remains positive despite the weekly decline. A 42.31 percentile is a rank within the sample, not proof that a squeeze or liquidation cannot occur. The report supplies a historical positioning cross-check; it does not identify stops, margin pressure or the timing of future orders.

FXSSI XAUUSD: 69.00% long / 31.00% short, a 38.00-percentage-point gap; collected 2026-10-29 at 07:32:41 UTC. The contrarian reading leans bearish. This adds a positioning cross-check to price structure; it gains relevance when market behavior agrees but does not supply an entry by itself. This is a broker sample; collection time is separate from a verified provider observation time, and stop locations cannot be inferred.

CNN Fear & Greed 36/100 on 2026-10-29 indicates fear in US equities. VIX 17.15 on 2026-10-29 indicates moderate expected 30-day S&P 500 volatility under the framework's classification. Defensive conditions can support gold demand, while a firmer dollar or higher real yields can offset it. Compare DXY, US real yields and gold price behavior to judge whether that support is effective. The indicators measure different dimensions and retain their observation dates; this context informs risk assessment without independently changing trade scores or the decision.

Hong Kong statistics released on 28 October, reported by Reuters, showed mainland China's September net gold imports through Hong Kong at 74.987 tonnes versus 58.491 tonnes in August, an increase of 16.496 tonnes and more than 28%. More metal entering through this route provides a physical-demand counterweight to the rates story. Restocking ahead of the holiday was a possible explanation, not a measured breakdown of motives. These are September flows through one route, not total Chinese demand or PBoC purchases, and they do not establish a current price floor.

US system liquidity: Fed assets minus TGA and reverse repo totaled $5,808.214 billion on 2026-10-21 (FRED). The four-week change was $+8.288 billion: a larger available-liquidity proxy can ease marginal funding pressure. SOFR minus IORB at +5.0 basis points on 2026-10-27 puts secured borrowing above reserve remuneration; persistence matters for assessing funding pressure. For XAUUSD, assess transmission through yields, risk appetite and price; US liquidity alone does not determine direction. Keep this system proxy distinct from measured orders in the analyzed market.

FRED TGA was $945.153 billion on 21 October, down 0.23% over four weeks. A Treasury cash drawdown can return reserves to the banking system, though other balance-sheet movements may offset it. SOFR at 3.95% against IORB at 3.90% on 27 October explains the positive funding spread. The balance-sheet proxy and borrowing-rate comparison measure different things; together they do not prove either a crisis or the complete absence of stress.

What would strengthen the bullish counter-case

Softer inflation or growth data could reduce expected tightening and support gold if real yields and USD decline in response. A headline miss alone does not guarantee that sequence, and the inflation and growth releases may send conflicting signals. Oil adds another competing channel: geopolitical uncertainty can encourage haven demand, while energy-driven inflation can sustain restrictive policy expectations. Higher oil or nominal Treasury yields alone do not establish higher real yields. Watch the observed reaction before deciding which mechanism is dominant.

A durable recovery would weaken the immediate bearish execution case, but crossing the developing average is distinct from structural invalidation. Price already being above that average is the reason for the active momentum warning, not evidence that the three-week structure has already reversed. The verified weekly-close boundary remains the governing structural condition.

What would strengthen the bearish case

If inflation or growth surprises lead to higher real yields and a firmer dollar, gold could face renewed opportunity-cost pressure. Price losing and failing to recover the developing weekly average would help resolve the current momentum conflict. This is an observation to reassess, not a new daily- or weekly-close rule for VWAP. No 70% policy-probability threshold, 2.5% real-yield threshold or DXY 101 threshold is part of the locked thesis.

At this pre-release snapshot, BEA schedules September Personal Income and Outlays, including PCE inflation, and the advance Q3 GDP estimate for 29 October at 12:30 UTC, or 19:30 GMT+7. The snapshot's ForexFactory calendar gives the same event time. Actual figures are not yet available at this analysis timestamp. Once released, compare actuals with verified expectations and then assess the rates, currency and gold response. The policy-implied odds above cannot substitute for those results.

Act on the warning without inventing an entry

The momentum warning is already active: reduce existing short exposure now. It does not require a daily or weekly close. A weekly close above TrendSL 4295.37 would invalidate the bearish structure: exit shorts and reassess. That structural condition remains pending. The decision for new positions is to stand aside.

The historical thesis close of 4030.38 remains separate from the newer quote. Preserve that distinction when following price after the data. A bearish assessment, a short-term recovery and a stand-aside decision can coexist because they describe different parts of the problem. Reassess with fresh evidence before considering new exposure; do not reinterpret an intact structural boundary as permission to ignore the warning already in effect.
